It's been a while since I last wrote a post, and I apologise. Like most of you, I got caught up in exams. This time of year is always particularly busy for me, and this year more than ever as it was my final year. The SU had some really good stress events, organised by our Vice President Education and Welfare Kenny - these included some cute stress balls!
As some of you might be aware, I ran in the elections to become your next VP Education and Welfare officer - and won! So in July I'll begin working closely with Kenny to learn everything there is to know about being a Sabb at RHUL. I'll be working with Ian, Jamie and Singh next year, which I'm looking forward to! Once again, thank you to everyone who voted in the elections, and thank you for choosing me. I can't wait to begin, and it's thanks to you all that I have this opportunity in the first place!
Next year I'll begin a new blog - but this one will be passed on to the four new liberation officers for them to keep you all up to date with their equalitea and liberation antics! The bi-elections are beginning soon if you would like to run for any of the positions available, including Black & Ethnic Minorities Officer and Disability Officer. You can find out more on the SU website here.
More good news is that we passed a motion in the last general meeting to allow all of the part time officer positions to be shared between two people - they can run in an election together, or be co-opted in at a later date. This makes our part time roles more accessible to disabled students, student parents and carers, and anybody else who can't commit as much as they'd like.
One step closer to being a more accessible, engaging and creative union!
I've been chairing the general meetings at the moment, which has been very fun although quite tiring as well! Looking forward to handing over the responsibilities to the next Chair, though really chuffed to have had the opportunity to do so as well.
Last night, SURHUL held the Laurels, an event to recognise the contribution of students. I was lucky enough to be mysteriously nominated - and honoured to have won one. There have been times this year where I felt alone and frustrated, so it feels amazing and humbling to be recognised. Each award was thoroughly deserved, as were each nomination. I consider myself lucky to be able to work with such incredible people, and as many of you are leaving I will be sad to see you go. I know you'll move on to bigger and better things, so I wish you all the best of luck!
Between Monday the 3rd of June and Friday the 7th June, I'll be around campus. Plenty of you have come up to me with ideas that I didn't have time to fully process - please get in touch with me if you'd like to meet up, one on one to talk about any ideas or plans you may have for next year. I want to listen, I want to spread infectious ideas with you and learn how to support you, I just have to create a space for that. I'll be sure to do the same when I become a sabbatical officer.
